iPhone | How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using RedSn0w (Mac) [4.2.1]

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on the 4.2.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. You will only be able to perform a tethered jailbreak at this time. This means you will need Redsn0w’s assistance to boot into your jailbroken device.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Make sure not to update to iOS 4.2.1 if you need an unlock as one is not yet available!

Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.2.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

[How-To] Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.7 *Update*

Update 2 : Redsn0w is updated ! Version 0.9.7 beta 6 is out !!

Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 6 Brings Skype Fix, Next Version Will Use 4.1 SHSH Blobs Instead Of 4.2b3 For 4.2.1 Untether

v0.9.7b6

Well the 6th beta of Redsn0w 0.9.7 has been released. This version fixes all Skype related issues which were hampering users ever since the first beta of this untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

v0.9.7b5

The iPhone Dev Team has released yet another update to Redsn0w 0.9.7 jailbreak tool. This new version fixes all sandbox-related issues, including Bluetooth problems on an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak. Also added is an “anti-piracy plea” note as a warning for those of you who are pirating iOS 4.2 beta 3 firmware.

v0.9.7b4

Starting with this version, redsn0w no longer requires you to install and run a separate program for the usbmux (this was a non-trivial procedure for many).   It’s okay to keep that program running if you normally use it for ssh anyway.  We also think we’ve fixed a race condition in the GUI that was causing redsn0w to crash during the “Preparing JB Monte Files” step. Nothing at all has changed on the iPhone side (where the main issues are still just Bluetooth and Skype).

v0.9.7b3

The third beta is now available (testers ONLY please!).  This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs too (like the daemons that handle media content).  So now embedded videos in iTunes work.

v0.9.7b2

This version should fix all the native app crashes (including Task switcher).  That’s the only change in from beta1….Bluetooth is still disabled.
